Mardi Gras is French for "Fat Tuesday," a tradition of eating rich and decadent foods before the fasting season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday.  This year, Mardi Gras falls on Tuesday, February 21.  If you want to get festive, we've got a craft project and recipe this week to get you started!

Duct Tape Mardi Gras Mask

What you need:

  • Colored duct tape (Mardi Gras colors are purple, green, and gold)
  • Pipe cleaners or plastic straws
  • Scissors
  • Mask template (optional)
  • Hole punch

What you do:
Put strips of duct tape on a table, sticky side up. (Note: this step is easier if you tear the tape rather then use scissors.) Cover all the sticky duct tape with more duct tape, sticky side down, so that it's no longer sticky. Draw or trace the make using a pen or Sharpie. Cut out your mask. Make a small ...

Jambalaya Recipe

While this traditional New Orleans dish may be too spicy for younger kids, it is a favorite in our household.

New Orleans Jambalaya

  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 1 large red bell pepper, chopped
  • 2 Tablespoons minced garlic
  • 12 ounces andouille chicken sausage, sliced (can substitute smoked turkey sausage)
  • 2 cups uncooked white rice
  • 2 teaspoons paprika
  • 2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper
  • 2 teaspoons dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 2 cans low-sodium chicken broth
  • 1 cup water ...

From the gifted playwright Kim Hines comes a vivid and dramatic tale based upon the popular book by Vaunda Micheaux Nelson. A young girl is given a rag doll, through whose eyes we see the extremes of slave life—the cruelty, the love, and the daring escape from slavery via the Underground Railroad. A great play for Black History Month, and one that is sure to both tug on the heart-strings and leave the audience uplifted with hope.

Nearly 400 local and national exhibitors will be on hand to offer creative solutions for all home project needs. The show is a great place to gather information, comparison-shop, get ideas and advice and get inspired. Exhibitors offer a look at the newest product innovations and trends for inside and outside the home. Included are contractors, remodelers, building suppliers, architects, landscaping firms and interior designers. Each child must be accompanied by a parent or guardian in order to participate in this drop-in program. Sunday, February 26 - Winter Ritter Fest

Enjoy a winter day at beautiful Ritter Farm Park! Activities to enjoy will include snowmobile rides by the Sno Trackers Snowmobile Club, a naturalist-led activity, snowshoeing, a craft, bonfire, and s`mores and hot cocoa! Bring your camera and have your picture taken with the Hastings Huskies sled dogs. (Due to the popularity of the dog sled rides you must pre-register through Parks & Recreation to secure a time slot. The Minnesota Swarm are celebrating the end of the regular season by thanking you, Swarm fans.
